Neil Fleming

Fundraising & Communications Specialist

Neil has been working in the arts for most of his life, most recently as the Executive Director of a medium-sized Indigenous-led theatre company in Calgary. In his last year as ED the company brought in just shy of $1 million in combined grant and sponsorship revenue. As the settler-support in the room, Neil worked along with Indigenous theatre artists to rethink colonial practices in the arts and propose new Indigenous-led paths forward towards more holistic working models.

Neil is a professionally produced playwright and a member of the Playwrights Guild of Canada. He is an award-winning screenwriter with work ranging from documentary films to lifestyle television, comedic short films, commercials and corporate video. He is also a long-time theatrical set and lighting designer, stage hand, scenic carpenter, and props builder. For Brazen, this translates into expertise in communication and story-telling, as well as project management, grant-writing and budgeting.

He has spend more than a dozen years on arts-related not-for-profit boards doing everything from budgets and contracts, to programming and fundraising. As a former ED, he understands the workload most small organisations find themselves managing. He recently joined the Board of The Grand - Western Canada’s oldest theatre, and chairs their fundraising committee. He is excited to bring his outside the box thinking to the Brazen team.

Neil is currently working as a freelance producer and designer while carving out time to write a new play or two. He plays pickup hockey three to four times a week, is an enthusiastic but mediocre golfer, and is an avid adventurer in several weekly D&D campaigns. He loves spending time with his family - Jane, Emma and Trixie.
